Bunting droomt van sprookjeseinde aan seizoen 2024

Na een memorabele jaar, gelooft Stephen Bunting dat zijn nieuwe legioen aan fans het kan inspireren op het komende WK.

Bunting begon het jaar door in januari een beker omhoog te houden, nadat hij de Masters wist te winnen. Nu hoopt hij het seizoen in dezelfde stijl af te sluiten in het Alexandra Palace.

Bunting zal één van de grote sterren zijn die zullen strijden om de Sid Waddell Trophy van 15 december tot en met 3 januari, maar weinig spelers zullen zo veel support ontvangen als Bunting.

De 39-jarige is over de afgelopen jaren een social media sensatie geworden. Hij ontwikkelde zijn eigen groep fans en introduceerde de hashtag 'Let's Go Bunting Mental'.

BUNTING: “It started off as a bit of a joke with the Tik Tok side of things, but what you see with me is what you get.

It has been nice to show the fans my personality and give something back to them, and obviously the walk-on song Titanium, they absolutely love it.

I feel like I’m orchestrating a massive crowd when I’m up there. It feels like everyone is there for me!

That might sound a bit selfish, but I really enjoy it, and long may that continue.

I’ve got a great fanbase behind me which really helps. When you step on that stage and they’re all going ‘Bunting Mental’, it makes it easier to play!”

De voormalig Lakeside wereldkampioen heeft een goed record in het grootste toernooi ter wereld. Hij haalde al drie keer de kwartfinales sinds hij zijn debuut maakte tien jaar geleden. Hij wist in 2021 zijn enige kwartfinale te winnen.

Dit jaar zal Bunting voor het eerst naar het Alexandra Palace afreizen als een regerend kampioen van een PDC Major titel, nadat hij in januari The Masters wist te winnen.

Hij won die titel met een spannende 11-7 overwinning op Michael van Gerwen in de finale, nadat hij eerder in het toernooi Ross Smith, Luke Humphries, Peter Wright en Nathan Aspinall versloeg.

BUNTING: “Never in a million years could I have imagined being in this position a few years ago.

There were points when I could have just walked away from the sport, but this is something I’ve done all my life; I don’t know anything different.

Winning the Masters has given me the confidence to push forward, and I believe it’s going to be a catalyst for bigger things to come.

I’m just riding on that crest of a wave at the moment, and hopefully the fans can be on that ride with me."

Bunting heeft dit WK nog iets extra's om voor te spelen, nadat hij en zijn vrouw Keila vorige maand de geboorte van hun zoon Theo bekend maakten.

BUNTING: “I’ve just welcomed my new son into the world, so I need to keep winning and supply for my family.

The determination is there, the belief is there, and I’m going to work harder than I’ve ever worked in my life for this.

I want it so much. Not just the World Championship. I want to be back in the Premier League, playing in the elite events all over the world.

I believe I’m on the right track, but I know there’s still work to be done.”
