Brendan Dolan won op het vijfde Players Championship toernooi zijn achtste ranking titel. Dit deed hij met een 8-6 overwinning op Michael Smith in de finale.
De Noord-Ier had qua finishes misschien wel zijn beste dag ooit en pakte mede daardoor de eerste van vier titels die deze week verdeeld worden in de Marshall Arena in Milton Keynes.
Dolan opende de dag met een persoonlijk record. Hij gooide een gemiddelde van 111,2 in zijn eerste ronde overwinning op Jason Lowe. Nadat hij Jamie Hughes met 6-2 versloeg, deed hij dat met dezelfde score ook tegen wereldkampioen Gerwyn Price.
De Noord-Ier produceerde gemiddeldes van 106 en 109,5 in zijn overwinningen op Damon Heta bij de laatste 16 en tegen Scott Mitchell in de kwartfinales. In de halve finales versloeg hij Joe Cullen met 7-4.
De finale werd een spannende wedstrijd waarin Dolan uiteindelijk met 8-6 boven kwam drijven.
DOLAN: "I've changed a few things. I want to win tournaments and you need a bit of luck on the day, and possibly somewhere along the line I've had a bit of luck.
I know I've played well to beat these people [today] but that's what I do in practice. People don't believe you because you can't produce it where it counts, and I'm trying to do what I do in practice here.
I felt today that my performance level, my scoring was a lot better. I've won ProTours before and my finishing was clinical but today I thought I thoroughly deserved it.
The standard was good at the top when I first started, but now it's that good at the bottom so you have to raise your game.
I want to win more. I'm fed up of just taking part, and for a few years I was happy just to be here with the best in the world. Now I'm not happy to do that, I want to be better than them."
