Luke Littler wil in de voetsporen treden van grote namen in sport wanneer hij dit weekend zijn debuut maakt in Madison Square Garden.
De tiener Littler zal één van de acht vertegenwoordigers van de PDC zijn in The Theater in Madison Square Garden op 31 mei en 1 juni. De World Series of Darts keert dit weekend voor het derde jaar op rij terug naar New York.
Littler voegt zich bij Luke Humphries, Michael van Gerwen, Michael Smith, Gerwyn Price, Nathan Aspinal, Rob Cross en Peter Wright in het zestienkoppige deelnemersveld. De PDC-spelers zullen in hun openingswedstrijd spelen tegen een Noord-Amerikaanse vertegenwoordiger.
De iconische Madison Square Garden is de thuislocatie geweest van vele historische sportmomenten. Nu wil Littler zijn naam aan die lijst toevoegen in The Big Apple.
LITTLER: “So many athletes and superstars have performed there and now we're going to be there. I can't wait, it’s so exciting.
We just keep going on this rollercoaster journey. We keep travelling to these amazing places like New York, and I'm just enjoying the ride at the moment.
Darts has gone worldwide. I know the US Masters has been going for quite a few years now, and it's just good to increase the popularity of the sport in the [United] States.”
Littler arriveert in New York als de nieuwe Premier League kampioen, nadat hij een sensationele negen-darter gooide in een 11-7 overwinning op Humphries in de finale voor 14.000 fans in de O2 in Londen. Dat was het grootste dartspubliek ooit in het Verenigd Koninkrijk.
Dat besloot een opmerkelijke zes maanden voor Littler, die de dartswereld op zijn kop zette met een finaleplaats op het WK tijdens zijn debuut in het Alexandra Palace afgelopen januari.
De 17-jarige uit Warrington won sinds dien een World Series toernooi in Bahrein, twee European Tour toernooien in Wieze en Graz en won ook het eerste ProTour-toernooi van het jaar.
LITTLER: “I know there's still a lot of darts to be played in my career, but I'm just enjoying the experience right now.
I'm just taking everything in my stride - from the World Championship to Bahrain, to the European Tour and now the Premier League, I'm just a 17-year-old boy who is enjoying his darts!
Maybe in a few years time I'll look back and see what I achieved as a teenager, but at the minute I'm just focused on what's ahead.
I would love to win everything. That's probably my goal, to win every major competition in the PDC, and then potentially build on that.”
De bet365 US Darts Masters en Noord-Amerikaans kampioenschap worden dit weekend gehouden in The Theater in Madison Square Garden.
