De eerste editie van de Women's World Matchplay vindt vanmiddag plaats in Blackpool. De iconische Winter Gardens in de thuisbasis voor het toernooi.
Het eerste volledig op TV uitgezonden vrouwentoernooi van de PDC zal in de middagsessie op zondag gehouden worden en wordt live uitgezonden op Sky Sports, evenals bij de wereldwijde uitzendpartners van de PDC.
Het deelnemersveld bestaat uit de acht beste speelsters op de PDC Women's Series Order of Merit in 2022 tot nu toe. Vijf verschillende nationaliteiten zijn vertegenwoordigd tijdens het toernooi.
De winnares van het toernooi ontvangt £10.000 aan prijzengeld en een plaats op de Cazoo Grand Slam of Darts in november.
Lisa Ashton is als eerste geplaatst voor het toernooi na haar geweldige start aan 2022. Ze won zeven van de twaalf Women's Series toernooi dit jaar.
Ashton, die de eerste vrouwelijk speelster was die een Tour Card bemachtigde, zal vanmiddag een nieuw hoofdstuk willen toevoegen aan haar toch al mooie carrière.
ASHTON: “This is fantastic for me.
I’ve always wanted to play at the Winter Gardens, but when I lost my Tour Card I didn’t think I’d get the chance.
Winning the Women’s World Matchplay would be right up there with my greatest achievements. I would love to have this trophy on my CV.
It is another massive opportunity for me, and I would love to be the first winner. I know what I can do, and I just hope I can produce it on the big stage tomorrow.”
Fallon Sherrock is van plan om vandaag meer geschiedenis te schrijven op het podium in Blackpool. Zij zal het opnemen tegen de jonge Ierse Katie Sheldon in haar kwartfinale.
Voormalig Grand Slam of Darts kwartfinalist Sherrock won dit jaar drie Women's Series toernooien en de 18-jarige TV-debutant Sheldon kijkt uit naar de kans op het op de nemen tegen één van de grootste namen in de sport.
SHELDON: “I’m absolutely buzzing. I cannot describe it.
It’s a dream come true and to be playing on such an iconic stage, I cannot wait.
I think you have to relish the underdog tag, but everyone has three darts on that stage, so anything can happen.
The last time I played Fallon I beat her, but it’s going to be completely different up there. I just have to play my own darts and see what happens.”
De als derde geplaatste Lorraine Winstanley neemt het op tegen Rhian Griffiths uit Wales voor een plek in de halve finales. Winstanley won vorige maand haar eerste Women's Series toernooi.
WINSTANLEY: “Confidence is everything, and I feel really happy and relaxed with my game.
Rhian is a great player. We had a real battle at the last Women’s Series. She’s got that fight, and nobody can write her off.
Winning this title would genuinely be top of the pile for me.
Winstanley gaf toe dat het een droom is voor haar om dit jaar in de Grand Slam of Darts te kunnen spelen.
WINSTANLEY: “I love the Grand Slam. As a spectator it’s one of my favourite tournaments. It’s cut-throat but it’s exciting, so it’s another great incentive."
In de andere kwartfinale op zondagmiddag neemt de Nederlandse Aileen de Graaf het op tegen Laura Turner, die de Sky Sports-commentaarpositie verruilt voor het grote podium.
De Graaf komt het toernooi binnen na een finaleplaats op een Women's Series toernooi vorige maand, Turner haalde twee finales op rij op toernooi vijf en zes op haar route naar Blackpool.
TURNER: “It’s exciting, it’s nerve-wracking, and from the comfort of the commentary box, this is really putting yourself out there.
I just hope I can produce the levels I found at the PDC Women’s Series.
Lisa is the frontrunner this weekend, and I’ve beaten her twice this year, so that gives you confidence.
For me it’s about performing consistently, and I’ve got Aileen de Graaf, who I’ve had a lot of tough battles against recently, so I’m hoping I come out on the winning side tomorrow.”
