Michael Smith wil zijn pijlen voor zich laten spreken tijdens de rest van het William Hill World Darts Championship. Hij zal proberen in het nieuwe jaar tot wereldkampioen gekroond te worden.
Smith zette in zijn wedstrijd tegen Ron Meulenkamp met 106,32 het hoogste gemiddelde van het toernooi tot nu toe neer en kwam daarmee meteen goed van start.
De runner-up van 2019 gooide daarna tien keer 180 en vier 100+-finishes in zijn 4-2 overwinning in de derde ronde op William O'Connor.
Smith heeft hoop in zijn kansen op het omhoog houden van de Sid Waddell Trophy voorafgaand aan zijn partij bij de laatste 16 tegen Jonny Clayton op woensdagavond.
SMITH: “I’ve played really well most of the time so far but I’m not setting the bar; I’m just playing my game.
I just play darts and don’t talk myself up. I’ll leave that to the likes of Michael van Gerwen, Peter Wright and Gerwyn Price.
Jonny doesn’t do it either. He is a model professional. He has won four TV titles this year but he would never boast about that.
I’m here to play darts and compete. I’ll leave the talking to other people.
I really want another crack at the final. I want to do it as soon as possible. I might have another 20 World Championships ahead of me but I want to make an impact now.”
