Fallon Sherrock wil geschiedenis schrijven door de eerste editie van de Women's World Matchplay te winnen op zondagmiddag.
Sherrock zal deelnemen aan het historische toernooi waaraan acht vrouwen zullen deelnemen. Het is het eerste volledig op TV uitgezonden vrouwentoernooi van de PDC.
Het nieuwe toernooi biedt de ruimte aan de acht beste speelsters op de PDC Women's Series Order of Merit in 2022 tot nu toe. Zij zullen het tegen elkaar opnemen in een knock-outformat. Voor de winnares ligt £10.000 klaar.
SHERROCK: “I think it will be amazing.
It has always been an ambition to play at the Winter Gardens, and the women get an opportunity to play now. I’m so excited!"
De vrouw uit Milton Keynes neemt het in haar kwartfinale op tegen de 18-jarige Ierse Katie Sheldon, maar wil nog meer indruk maken tijdens haar debuut op het podium in Blackpool.
SHERROCK: “Katie is a really good player. She is so consistent and I’m really excited to play her, because you know you’re in for a good game.
Hopefully we can show everyone what we can do.”
Sherrock zal samen met Lisa Ashton het meeste publiek trekken naar de Winter Gardens, Ashton is als eerste geplaats met zeven titel tot nu toe in 2022, met Sherrock op drie.
Ashton is één van de grootste namen in het vrouwendarts, ze heeft vier WK-titels op haar naam staan en wist in januari 2020 als eerste vrouw ooit een PDC Tour Card te bemachtigen.
Sherrock zelf creëerde haar deel van de geschiedenis door op het PDC WK van 2020 als eerste vrouw ooit van een man te winnen op het podium in het Alexandra Palace. Ze versloeg daar Ted Evetts en Mensur Suljovic.
De 27-jarige stond sinds dien in de finale van de Nordic Darts Masters in 2021, voordat ze in november vorig jaar de kwartfinales van de Cazoo Grand Slam of Darts wist te halen. Ze geeft toe dat ze daarom een gewild persoon is om te verslaan.
SHERROCK: “I think it’s always good to have rivalries and players to aspire to. There are always those players you want to get a win over.
I think in the women’s game there are those players, and I think over the years you’re going to see more of them, so it will be really good to have that hunger in the women’s game as well.”
Sherrock kan haar plaats op de Cazoo Grand Slam of Darts 2022 verzekeren door op zondagmiddag de Women's World Matchplay te winnen, de winnares van dit toernooi plaatst zich automatisch voor het toernooi.
Sherrock versloeg vorig jaar Mike De Decker, Gabriel Clemens en Suljovic in de Aldersley Leisure Village en verbrak een aantal records onderweg. Uiteindelijk verloor ze nipt in de kwartfinale van Peter Wright.
SHERROCK: “If I could get to the Grand Slam again that would be amazing, because I had a really good run there last time.
If I get the opportunity again, I want to get out of my group and go even further.
I want to push myself as much as I can, because I enjoyed the Grand Slam so much. It’s an amazing atmosphere, the adrenaline rush was brilliant, it’s just a great tournament.”
Sherrock lijkt ook op weg naar het WK van 2023, dat in december van dit jaar start. De top twee van de Women's Series Order of Merit plaatst zich automatisch voor at toernooi.
The Queen of the Palace heeft een voorsprong van £2.100 op Lorraine Winstanley in de derde positie.
SHERROCK: “I just know that one day I want to be a world champion – whether it be in the women’s game or the men’s game.
I want to win a major title as well, and make as much history as I can so people remember me when I’m done.
Then I can look back and say to my little boy: ‘This is what mummy did’ and he can be really proud of me.”
