Winmau World Masters keert terug, PDC-toernooi ondergaat metamorfose

De Winmau World Masters keer in 2025 terug op de dartsagenda, één van de grote PDC-toernooien ondergaat daarmee een radicale metamorfose. 

The Masters, dat in 2024 gewonnen werd door Stephen Bunting, zal de nieuwe Winmau World Masters worden. Het neemt daarmee de naam aan van een toernooi dat in 1975 voor het eerst werd gehouden en werd gewonnen door dartslegendes als Eric Bristow, Dennis Priestley en Phil Taylor.

De PDC bevestigde eerder al dat het toernooi op ITV4, dat in 2013 werd geïntroduceerd, in 2025 een ranking toernooi zou worden en van 30 januari t/m 2 februari gehouden zou worden in de Marshall Arena in Milton Keynes. Daarmee werd het toernooi verlengd met één dag ten opzichte van voorgaande jaren.

Tijdens de nieuwe Winmau World Masters zal de top 24 van de PDC Order of Merit na het WK van 2025 spelen, aangevuld met een uitgebreid deelnemersveld van acht spelers die door de voorrondes zijn gekomen. Alle wedstrijden zullen over een setformat gespeeld worden, met alle sets bestaande uit best of 3 legs, zoals het traditionele format van het toernooi altijd al was.

Op woensdag 29 januari zullen de voorrondes worden gespeeld in de Marshall Arena in Milton Keynes. Hier zullen maximaal 180 spelers strijden voor de acht overgebleven plaatsen voor de TV-rondes.

De voorrondes zijn open voor alle nog niet-geplaatste PDC Tour Card Houders, de beste acht spelers op de Secondary Tours van de PDC in 2024 en de Global Affiliate Tours. Daarnaast is het open voor vier spelers van de Junior Darts Corporation.

De voorrondes zullen live gestreamd worden op PDCTV en zullen gespeeld worden in een poulefase met 32 poules, gevolgd door een knock-outfase vanaf de laatste 32 en verder. Hieruit zullen de acht speler voortkomen die mee zullen doen aan het uiteindelijke toernooi.

Bijna alle tickets voor het toernooi in Milton Keynes zijn al uitverkocht tijdens de eerste twee dagen van de voorverkoop in september.
