Glen Durrant haalt inspiratie uit een sensationele Premier League in 2020 tijdens zijn voorbereiding op de start van het nieuwe Unibet Premier League seizoen op maandag.
De Premier League titel in oktober vorig jaar was voor Durrant een bekroning op zijn indrukwekkende eerste twee jaar in de PDC, maar snel daarna verloor Durrant zijn vorm.
Durrant werd besmet met COVID-19 in de week na zijn overwinning in de Premier League waardoor hij het laatste European Tour toernooi van het jaar en het European Championship moest missen. Daarna verloor Durrant zijn eerste wedstrijden in de Grand Slam of Darts en de Players Championship Finals.
Op het WK verloor Durrant bij de laatste 16 van Dirk van Duijvenbode, en pakte daarna twee weken rust om de batterijen weer op te laden.
DURRANT: "After the Premier League final it all went badly wrong.
I got ill and maybe rushed myself back too soon by playing in the Winter Series ahead of the Grand Slam, and technically my throw wasn't quite right either.
I went into the Worlds with my confidence at nil percent. I was trying to talk a good story, but inside I knew I was struggling.
I took two weeks off after the World Championship and didn't pick up my darts. It was difficult, but it worked and I found the love again for practice and found the love again for darts."
Durrant neemt het komende maandag op de eerste avond van de Premier League op tegen Nathan Aspinall, dit is een herhaling van de Premier League finale van afgelopen jaar.
De 50-jarige liet tijdens Players Championship 3 in februari zien dat hij weer op de weg terug is door een kwartfinaleplaats te halen, maar hij is nog niet op de plek waar hij ooit was.
DURRANT: "I possibly would have pulled out of the Premier League had it been a February start and I was still in a slump.
I don't want to play in front of millions of people on Sky Sports and get walloped 7-0 every week.
That's not my style, so that might give an example of where my mindset was.
It's ridiculous to even think that now, but that's gone.
I've got to remember what a fantastic two years I've had in the PDC. I've still got ambitions to win a European Tour event, the World Matchplay and, of course, the burning desire is to win the World Championship.
And nobody can ever take winning the Premier League away from me."
